How to run a Pomodoro timer on your Mac
The Pomodoro technique is simple: work in short, focused blocks and rest between them. A timer is the only tool you need.
The basic cycle
- Pick one task.
- Work for 25 minutes with nothing else open.
- Take a 5 minute break away from the screen.
- After four blocks, take a longer rest.
Variations that work
- 50 / 10. Longer blocks suit deep work such as writing or coding.
- 15 / 3. Shorter blocks help when starting is the hard part.
Handling interruptions
Write the interruption down and return to it when the timer ends. If you really have to stop, reset the block rather than counting it, so your session count stays honest.
Running it from the notch
In NotchStar’s Timers tab, choose Pomodoro, pick a preset and press play. A ring fills during the block, four dots track your sessions and the skip button moves to the next phase. The timer follows the real clock, so it stays accurate while the notch is closed and plays your chosen sound when it ends.
